The Waterford High School Lady Lancers Girls Tennis Team competes in the Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC), which consists of 15 teams in three divisions (based on enrollment):
Large Division: East Lyme, Fitch, WoodstockAcademy, Norwich Free Academy, Waterford
Medium Division: Ledyard, Montville, BaconAcademy, Windham, Killingly
Small Division: Stonington, St. Bernard, Lyman, New London, Griswold
Waterford’s regular season schedule consists of two matches against each team in the large division, and matches against other medium and small division teams. Varsity matches consist of four singles and three doubles matches. All varsity matches are best of three sets. The winning team needs to win at least four matches. Following varsity matches, JVs compete in single-set doubles matches.
Following the ECC regular season is the ECC singles and doubles tournament, for the best singles players and doubles teams in the conference. Following the ECC tournament is the state team tournament and the state individual singles and doubles tournament.
Waterford girls tennis has consistently been one of the more competitive teams in the ECC. The team has been the ECC medium division champion for the last six seasons (2004 through 2009). The team has consistently qualified and competed in the state team tournament. The team’s best run in the state tournament was in 2004, reaching the Class M semi-finals. In 2005, sophomore Angela Yue qualified for All-State based on her results at the state individual singles tournament.
In addition to competing, the team has visited the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI and the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens, NY.
